Laid to Rest (2009)

A slasher film from the late-2000s direct-to-video horror wave, written and directed by makeup effects artist Robert Hall. it was followed by a 2011 sequel, ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2. the film stars Bobbi Sue Luther, Kevin Gage, Lena Headey, and Sean Whalen.

What the film does

A young woman wakes up in a casket inside a funeral home with a head injury and no memory. she dials 911 but a man in a chrome skull mask with a shoulder-mounted camera kills the mortician and comes after her. she stabs him in the eye and flees, picked up by a man named Tucker who takes her home to his wife Cindy.

The killer, ChromeSkull, tracks her through the night. he kills Cindy. he kills a deputy and a sheriff. he beheads a captive in a barn full of previous victims. the film does not pause for backstory, it runs on the momentum of a chase where the pursuer is a calm, well-dressed man whose entire body of work exists on the tapes he mails to the police.

The third act lands at a convenience store where ChromeSkull runs out of tapes and makes the girl go inside to buy more. Tucker and Steven, the recluse who has been helping them, replace the adhesive ChromeSkull uses to affix his mask with cyanoacrylate. the climax is a payoff of that setup: when ChromeSkull’s mask gets knocked off and he reapplies it with the superglue, his face melts.

The film ends with the girl discovering she was a sex worker ChromeSkull picked up and beat with a bat, the blow that erased her memory. she writes an explanation on the back of her missing-person flyer and leaves town with Tommy, the only other survivor.

Why it’s in the canon

Late-era slasher that commits to its gimmick. the criteria blend is 1+4, I loved it, and it does something no other slasher does: the shoulder-mounted camera makes ChromeSkull a documentarian of his own crimes. the mask is genuinely striking, a polished chrome skull that looks expensive and deliberate, not like a halloween prop. Hall was a makeup effects artist before he directed, and it shows in the gore: the face-melting finale, the tire-inflator kill, the beheading. the film knows exactly what it is and never pretends otherwise.

What stays with me

The chrome skull mask. it is the rare slasher icon that looks like actual design work rather than a found object. the shoulder camera turns the killer into a filmmaker, and the film into a movie about watching movies about killing. for a 90-minute dvd-era horror film made in maryland on a rental car budget, it punches far above its weight.
