Melancholia

two sisters are left to deal with the collapse of a family wedding and the approach of a rogue planet called melancholia. justine is already deep inside a depression she cannot explain to the people around her. claire tries to keep the estate, the marriage, and the ordinary rules of life intact.

what the film does

part one is a wedding that slowly comes apart. justine marries michael at claire and john’s castle, but the reception turns hostile as her parents, employer, and new husband all demand a version of happiness she cannot perform. she abandons the party, quits her job, and ends the marriage before the night is over.

part two moves to the estate as melancholia appears from behind the sun. the scientists say it will pass earth, but the planet’s path turns back toward them. john kills himself when the collision becomes certain. claire tries to flee with her son leo, while justine meets the end with a calm that claire cannot understand. justine builds a small magic cave for leo, and the three of them sit inside it as the planets collide.

why it’s in the canon

criteria blend is 1+3+4, loved it, want to remember it, and it does something no other film does. melancholia makes depression cosmic without reducing it to a symbol. the wedding, the golf course, the blue planet, the horses, and the green estate all feel like parts of one mental weather system. von trier gives the apocalypse away in the opening minutes, then spends the rest of the film asking what different kinds of people do with certainty.

kirsten dunst’s performance is the center of it. justine is not heroic because she defeats the end of the world. she is ready for it because the world has already ended inside her, and that terrible calm becomes a strange form of care when leo needs the magic cave.

what stays with me

the opening images set richard wagner’s tristan und isolde against slow motion visions of the film’s final moments. then the wedding begins in bright daylight and social panic. by the time melancholia fills the sky, the film has made the collision feel less like a twist than a release. the last image is not a victory or a lesson. it is two planets meeting, and three people holding hands in a shelter made from branches.
