what the film does

otto (emilio estevez), a young punk in los angeles, loses his supermarket job and gets recruited by bud (harry dean stanton), a veteran repo man who teaches him the code: the repo man spends his life getting into tense situations. meanwhile, a lobotomized scientist drives a 1964 chevy malibu through the desert with something radioactive in the trunk, and every government agency wants it. the malibu glows green and vaporizes anyone who opens it. otto drifts between his punk friends, his ufo-conspiracy coworker miller (tracey walter), and a mysterious woman named leila (olivia barash) who claims the malibu holds the truth. by the end the car lifts off into the sky and miller climbs in. the repo code does not cover this.

why this one

repo man is the film the canon did not know it needed. it is a satire of reagan’s america wrapped in a car-repossession comedy wrapped in a ufo abduction movie. it was shot in the summer of 1983 by a 29-year-old first-time director and scored by iggy pop and a roster of la hardcore bands (black flag, the circle jerks, suicidal tendencies). universal had no idea what to do with it and gave it a tiny release. critics loved it anyway. the television edit became its own cult artifact because cox replaced every profanity with surreal overdubs instead of silence. the film is loose, strange, and deeply angry in a way that feels earned. it does not lecture. it just points the camera at a glowing green car and waits.
