after a lightning bolt zaps an experimental military robot called number 5, it develops sentience and escapes from the nova robotics lab. it wanders into astoria, oregon, where stephanie speck, an animal caregiver, mistakes it for an alien and takes it in. the robot, curious and childlike, absorbs everything around it as “input,” learning language and forming a personality. meanwhile, its designer newton crosby and his assistant ben jabituya are sent to recover it before the military destroys it.
what makes short circuit work is the sincerity. johnny 5 is not a threat, just a being trying to understand death and friendship. the practical puppet effects by syd mead’s team give the robot weight and physicality. ally sheedy’s performance is earnest even when the script gets goofy, and steve guttenberg plays the straight man to a robot. the three stooges reprogramming scene where johnny 5 rewrites the other saints’ personalities is pure joy.
the film came out the same year as top gun and aliens, and it quietly grossed over 40 million against a 15 million budget. it spawned a sequel and a generation of kids who wanted their own robot friend. it is the blueprint for every “robot learns to feel” story that followed.
